Mercy Health is thrilled to launch a brand-new Primary Care Sports Medicine practice in the vibrant Waterville/Perrysburg area-and we're looking for a passionate physician to lead this exciting initiative as both a practicing provider and head physician. Whether you're newly board-certified or bring years of experience, this is a rare opportunity to build something meaningful from the ground up. You'll have the autonomy to shape the practice, influence program development, and serve as a key leader in a growing sports medicine program. This role includes direct partnerships with local high schools, colleges, and major athletic events.
Position Highlights
- 80-100% Sports Medicine focus, with flexibility to incorporate primary care during ramp-up
- Outpatient-only role - no inpatient or hospitalist responsibilities
- Monday-Friday schedule (7:30 AM-5:00 PM, with flexibility and potential for extended hours during sports seasons)
- Team physician role with a major local university and community events (e.g., Glass City Marathon)
- Work closely with athletic trainers, physical therapists, and coaches; provide both in-clinic and occasional on-site care
- Supported by a full care team: MAs, LPNs, front office staff, and Practice Manager
- On-site access to lab and X-ray services, Epic/MyChart for virtual care, and DAX AI for efficient documentation
What You'll Do
- Diagnose, treat, and help prevent injuries related to athletic training, competition, and physical activity
- Serve as a trusted resource for athletes, coaches, trainers, and physical therapists
- Provide education and counseling on injury prevention, nutrition, and recovery
- Supervise rehab and return-to-play plans; participate in pre-season physicals and sideline coverage as needed
- Collaborate across specialties (orthopedics, PT, neurology) to coordinate comprehensive care
- Prescribe medications, diagnostic imaging, orthotics/adaptive equipment, and therapy as needed
- Participate in continuing education and help shape clinical protocols, especially around concussion management
Physician Leader Opportunity
This role include 8-12 protected hours per week to lead and grow the regional Sports Medicine program:
- Lead communication and care coordination with local athletic trainers
- Oversee injury clinics, physicals, return-to-play evaluations, and protocol development
- Build relationships with high schools, colleges, and sports organizations
- Represent Mercy Health at outreach events, symposiums, and community engagements
- Ensure compliance with Ohio HB 143 and oversee post-concussion care
