The Bon Secours Mercy Health GME Stipend Program is designed to support residents and fellows in high-need specialties, establishing meaningful relationships early and helping build a physician workforce aligned with our mission of delivering compassionate, high-quality care.
Select candidates receive monthly stipend payments throughout their remaining training, with the loan fully forgiven after two years of full-time practice within the BSMH ministry or its clinically integrated network.
We’ll work closely with you to ensure a smooth, supported transition into practice, wherever in our ministry your specialty is needed most.

To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (green card holder), enrolled full-time in an ACGME-, AOA-, or BSMH-approved residency or fellowship program, and in good academic and professional standing. You must have completed at least one (1) year of training with at least six (6) months remaining, have no conflicting contractual obligations with another practice or health system, and be willing to relocate to a BSMH service area with identified need for your specialty. A background check is also required.

No. Eligible specialties are determined by BSMH’s high-need provider list, which is reviewed and updated periodically.

Yes. Candidates from outside the BSMH ministry are welcome to apply, provided they meet all eligibility requirements.

Candidates currently in active employment negotiations with BSMH are generally not eligible.

The stipend amount varies and is paid monthly for the duration of your remaining training, up to a lifetime maximum of $72,000.

It is structured as a forgivable loan. After two years of maintaining a full-time practice (minimum 36 hours/week) within the BSMH ministry or its clinically integrated network, the full amount is forgiven.

No. You can practice anywhere within the BSMH ministry where there is a demonstrated need for your specialty. We operate in many states across the Midwest and East Coast, and our recruiters will work with you to find the right fit.

Yes. Taxes will be withheld once the 2-year obligation period begins.

Be prepared to provide the completed stipend application (including vision statement and physician attestation form), your curriculum vitae (CV), and three (3) letters of recommendation with at least one (1) from your current Program Director. All letters must be typed on program letterhead, include your training start and anticipated end dates, and bear the author’s original signature.

Your application will be reviewed for completeness, and a background check will be initiated. Once cleared, an interview will be scheduled with the Market Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) and/or their delegate. Following approval, your packet goes to the Stipend Committee for final review. If approved, you’ll be notified by email, receive an agreement via DocuSign, and stipend payments will be arranged via direct deposit.

If you are unable to complete your commitment, the total amount received must be repaid.

No. There are no additional duty or call requirements during your training period as a condition of the stipend.
