Position Overview:
Mercy Health - the Neuroscience Institute is seeking a dedicated, board-certified (or board-eligible) Neurohospitalist to join our collaborative neurology team. This position offers the opportunity to practice in a multidisciplinary environment within a hospital setting, focusing on the diagnosis and management of acute neurological conditions. The ideal candidate will have strong clinical acumen in inpatient neurology, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered care.
As a Neurohospitalist, you will play a key role in delivering comprehensive neurological care to hospitalized patients and working closely with specialists across neurology, neurosurgery, critical care, and internal medicine. This is a full-time position with a week on, week off schedule and no outpatient responsibilities, offering opportunities for academic involvement, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical research, if desired.
Work Schedule:
- Direct patient care: Minimum of 84 hours every other week or 26 weeks/year (includes some overnight call via phone)
Key Responsibilities:
- Acute Neurological Care for both Consultative and Admitting services:
- Evaluate and manage patients presenting with acute neurological disorders such as ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, seizures/status epilepticus, traumatic brain injury (TBI), spinal cord injury, central nervous system infections, acute neuromuscular emergencies (e.g., Guillain-Barré syndrome, myasthenic crisis)
- Provide consultative services across all inpatient units, including Emergency Department, Intensive Care Units, Medical/Surgical floors, post-operative recovery units.
- Neurocritical Care Support:
- Participate in or coordinate care within the neuro-ICU
- Consult in the general ICU for neurologically complex patients and manage brain edema, seizures, increased ICP, and other life-threatening neurologic conditions
- Documentation and Quality Improvement
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the EMR
- Participate in quality initiatives (e.g., trauma reviews, morbidity, and mortality conferences), support accreditation efforts such as Comprehensive Stroke Center certification
- Resident Teaching and Clinical Education:
- Teach and mentor residents in clinical settings with 1 weekly resident clinic.
- Participate in didactic teaching, journal clubs, and provide supervision during rounding.
- Clinical trial and industry-sponsored neurology research study opportunities available if interested.
Mercy Health - The Neuroscience Institute
Inpatient Neurology consists of 2 rounding services at St. Vincent Hospital and 1 Metro rounding service - St. Charles, St. Anne, & Perrysburg Hospitals (3 small community hospitals within 10 miles). Acute neurology and stroke call covered by dedicated service. The Institute includes a Level 1 Trauma Center, a Level 3 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, and Comprehensive Stroke Accreditation, as well as a dedicated neurocritical care unit. Access to 2, 1.2 Tesla high-field open MRIs and 24/7 MRI services along with Physical Therapy services, and Neuropsychology are available.
Qualifications:
- Board Certification/Eligibility in Neurology.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with patients, staff, and a multidisciplinary care team.
- Strong academic skills with a desire to mentor and educate residents.
